Course Use and Redemption
How do I redeem my course voucher code?
Why can't I buy courses?
Youth Digital courses are currently not available for sale. We have an exciting announcement that will be formally revealed in the coming months. Until then, keep on creating!
Can I use a course voucher code I bought a long time ago?
Can I get a refund?
If for any reason you are not satisfied with your course, we’ll refund the full cost of any course purchased on our website within 30 days of purchase. Refunds will only be issued before the 4th module of the course is completed. If you purchased from a 3rd party, you must obtain a refund through that seller.
The course I bought is no longer available on your site.
From time to time our course offerings do change. Voucher codes should be redeemed within 30 days of purchase to ensure the product you intended to use is still available. However, if you wait longer than 30 days to redeem and the item you purchased is no longer available, you may redeem your voucher for a different course on our site.
Do your course work on MAC, PC or Linux operating systems?
All of our courses are both Mac and PC compatible. Unfortunately we cannot support Linux OS at this time. If you do use Linux and choose to purchase, we will not be able to provide a refund if you experience difficulty past the 30 day refund period.
Do your courses work on tablets or smartphones?
No. Youth Digital courses are designed for desktop and laptop computers as they require access to professional software that is not mobile compatible.
Where do I find specific technical and hardware requirements for your courses?
Each course has its own technical specifications that can be found on each individual course page.
Do I need to register for the course on the same computer my child will be using?
No, you do not. When you purchase the course, you will create a unique student username and password for your child. Using that login information, your child can login on any computer to begin their course.
Can I use the course on multiple computers?
Once a student has started a course, they can transfer their files to a different computer if needed, however this requires re-downloading the software, and carefully transferring files with a flash drive. For this reason, we recommend that a student not switch computers too frequently to avoid accidentally losing work.
Do I need a certain version of Minecraft for Mod Design 1 or Server Design 1?
No, you do not need to purchase a special version as long as you have Minecraft® for Mac or PC.
In Mod Design 1 we show students how to revert back to Minecraft® version 1.6.4 for testing. Upon completion, the mods can be easily exported to a more recent version of Minecraft® (currently up to version 1.9). We chose to use version 1.6.4 for teaching because we wanted to provide kids with the most stable and reliable modding environment possible. The code for the most recent version of Minecraft® is always changing as the developers fix bugs and adjust features. These constant updates make the code very unstable, and make for a very frustrating learning experience, especially for someone trying to learn the code for the first time. By using an older version, students are able to learn to code in a completely stable environment, then, they can export their mod to a more recent version of Minecraft when they are ready to use their mod and share it with friends!
What version of Java do you use? Will I need to update my setup for Mod Design 1?
You do not need to make any updates or adjustments to your current set up.
When the course software is installed, we automatically include a slightly older version of Java (1.7). As Java updates regularly on your computer, newer versions may become incompatible with the software that the students use to Mod, which is why we install this static, stable version of Java with Mod Design 1.
This version of Java is installed completely independent from any other version of Java you already have on your computer and is only used by the modding-related software, including Minecraft - it is not used by any other application on your computer so it will not affect any other program you use.
Although we are not using the most up-to-date version of Java, it does not pose any significant risks to your machine. This is so because we install this version completely independent from any other version of Java already installed, which stands alone from all other applications on your computer. The only applications that can access the version of Java we use are the ones for creating our Mods, which are Eclipse and Minecraft.
About our Courses
Does my student need to know a lot about computers? Are there any prerequisites?
Our courses are designed for beginners, so no prior experience is required! We’ll guide you through every step, from downloading the software to submitting your final project.
What course should my child take first?
Any of our Level 1 courses would be an appropriate place to start, since our courses are designed with the assumption that students are new to the subject and material. We recommend that you choose a course based on what your student is most interested in learning!
Does your student love video games? Then we might recommend 3D Game Development 1 or App Design 1. If your student has an eye for design, they might enjoy Fashion Design 1, 3D Animation 1 3D Character Animation or 3D Printing & Modeling 1. For kids with an interest in coding-- or a love of Minecraft!-- we recommend either Server Design 1 or Mod Design 1.

My student doesn't fall between the ages of 8-14. Will this be appropriate for them?
Our courses are designed for kids between the ages of 8 and 14, so the content and material are tailored to that age group. However, many students both younger and older have enjoyed taking Youth Digital courses and found them fun and effective. Older students can expect to move more quickly through the courses, and younger students may need additional parent support to complete them.
I have more than one child, can they both take the course?
Each student must have their own account. Youth Digital courses are an immersive experience that kids move through at their own pace as they respond to questions, watch videos, and work on their final projects. Each student is personally supported by our team, and receives personal feedback on their project so it is necessary for each kid to have their own course.
How long will it take my child to complete a course?
The time to complete a course varies greatly from student to student. It depends on a number of factors, including how often kids work on the course, and for how long. There are about 30 hours of instruction in each course, but bear in mind that kids can spend drastically different amount of time completing their final projects or continuing to create new projects after they have made it through all the lessons. Typically, students finish within a few months.
How long does my child have access to the course?
All courses include 6 months of access from the day you purchase the course so that your student can move through the course at his or her own pace. Most likely, it will not take your child this long to complete the course, but the 6 month course subscription ensures that your child will not have to rush to complete the course and also allows them to create additional projects after the lessons have been completed.
Can my child make more than one project?
Yes! We strongly encourage students to continue creating new projects and building on the skills they have learned. We will review and grade the first project they submit; after that, we would love to see all the other projects your child creates and will provide feedback on those as time allows.
Does my student get to keep their final project after the course expires?
Yes! Your student will be instructed on how to save their final project in a format that can be played and shared as much they want. The one exception to this, is our Server Design 1 course. Because there is ongoing cost associated with hosting a live server, you must purchase an extension in order to continue accessing your Server project.
Can I redeem a course now, and start it later?
You must enroll in a course within 30 days of redeeming it. When you enroll, your access to the course begins.
Why don't you offer phone support?
Because we are helping kids with technical issues and instructional questions that can be tricky, our online support methodology has proven to be faster and more effective than telephone support. Online support also allows us to capture information about the student user, system profile and course progress, while also enabling us to share computer screens and even remotely control your system (with your permission, of course!). The result is faster, better answers, with less back and forth with support.
Do I need to take Mod Design 1: Expansion Pack before taking Mod Design 2?
No, you can go directly from Mod Design 1 to Mod Design 2! Mod Design 1: Expansion Pack covers specialty topics so after taking Mod Design 1 your child can either go directly to Mod Design 2 for more advanced Java, or they can take Mod Design 1: Expansion Pack to delve into specialty topics in Java and Command Blocks.
