Frequently Asked Questions
About Youth Digital
Who is Youth Digital?
Founded in 2010 and based in Chapel Hill, NC, we’re a group of bright, talented individuals committed to making life-changing technology education accessible to kids around the world. We have 50 dedicated team members with backgrounds in technology, education, customer support, and more. Youth Digital offers a compelling mix of online courses that teach kids the critical technology concepts and skills that they will need to be successful in today’s digital world, as well as tomorrow’s.
How do Youth Digital courses work?
Our breakthrough learning platform provides kids a comprehensive learning experience that is amazingly fun, highly interactive, and rewarding. Students watch videos, respond to questions, earn badges, complete quizzes, and attempt challenging assignments as they step toward mastering critical technology skills and professional-level software.
Each course includes 12 sequential modules that students work through at their own pace. Each module includes an introductory video, time for students to work on their final project, a final quiz, and a troubleshooting challenge to tackle before moving on to the next module. At the end of the course, students walk away with a complete, professional final project that they can share with family and friends.
How does Youth Digital fit into STEAM education initiatives?
STEAM (science, technology, engineering, math, and art) education is a national priority for today’s students. At Youth Digital, we believe that STEAM concepts concepts are a critical component of how kids will solve the problems of the future. We design our courses to enrich kids’ knowledge in these key subjects while also drawing out the creativity inside every child. Our mission dovetails with that of many other national initiatives, including Made with Code and the President’s ConnectED initiative.
Does the Youth Digital teaching method work?
We fully stand behind our courses and are proud to say that 99% of our customers would recommend Youth Digital! We’ve had five years of in-person experiences with kids to create a comprehensive, effective online learning solution. All of our online courses have been derived from our after-school classes and summer camp programs, allowing us to make online courses based on a highly refined version of our curriculum. Youth Digital courses are designed around the principal of project-based learning, where students work for a sustained amount of time to create their final project, learning new skills and key concepts along the way. Project-based learning is considered to be more effective than traditional teaching methods, as it builds deep content comprehension and boosts students’engagement with the material. We also have a team of experienced curriculum designers who work diligently to ensure that our courses offer the most up-to-date, polished, and innovate curriculum available today.
What support does Youth Digital offer?
At Youth Digital, we believe that kids learn best when they have a solid support system. That’s why we have a dedicated team of online teachers with extensive experience in our course curriculum available to students throughout their course. To learn more, visit our Support page.
About Our Courses
Does my student need to know a lot about computers? Are there any prerequisites?
Our courses are designed for beginners, so no prior experience is required! We’ll guide you through every step, from downloading the software to submitting your final project.
What course should my child take first?
Any of our Level 1 courses would be an appropriate place to start, since our courses are designed with the assumption that students are new to the subject and material. None of our Level 1 courses have prerequisites, so we recommend that you choose a course based on what your student is most interested in learning!
Does your student love video games? Then we recommend 3D Game Design 1 or App Design 1. If your student has an eye for design, they might enjoy Fashion Design 1, 3D Animation 1 or 3D Printing & Modeling 1. For kids with an interest in coding-- or a love of Minecraft!-- we recommend either Server Design 1 or Mod Design 1.
My student doesn't fall between the ages of 8 to 14. Will this be appropriate for them?
Our courses are designed for kids between the ages of 8 and 14, so the content and material are tailored to that age group. However, students both younger and older have enjoyed taking Youth Digital courses and found them fun and effective. Older students can expect to move more quickly through the courses, and younger students may need additional parent support to complete them.
I have more than one child. Can they all use the same course?
Youth Digital courses are an immersive experience that kids move through at their own pace as they respond to questions, watch videos, and work on their final projects. Each course can only support one final project, so it is necessary for each kid to have their own course in order for them to complete their own unique final project. Each child must have their own account in order for your student to have an optimal experience using our courses.
How long will it take my child to complete a course?
The time to complete a course varies greatly from student to student. It depends on a number of factors, including how often kids work on the course, and for how long. There are about 30 hours of instruction in each course, but bear in mind that kids can spend drastically different amount of time completing their final projects or continuing to create new projects after the course has officially ended.
How long does my child have access to the course?
All courses come with one full year of access to the materials so that your student can move through the course at his or her own pace. Most likely, it will not take your child this long to complete the course, but the year long subscription ensures that your child will not have to rush to complete the course and also allows them to create additional projects after the course has officially been completed.
Can my child make more than one project?
Yes! We strongly encourage students to continue creating new projects and building on the skills they have learned. We will review and grade the first project they submit; after that, we would love to see all the other projects your child creates and will provide feedback on those as time allows.
Does my student get to keep their final project after they complete the course?
Absolutely! Your student will be instructed on how to save their final project in a format that can be played and shared as much they want.
Can my child experience Youth Digital courses in person?
